Jack

Jack and Lana sat across from Stann and Talia at their favorite table in the inn. They were all enjoying Chef Ramsey’s breakfast special. It was one of the few moments since the dragon attack that felt normal. No worrying about training, no dealing with loss or the next emergency fire to be dealt with, just a close group of friends enjoying a meal.

“This is so good,” Talia said as she scooped up another mouthful. “I’m going to miss Chef Ramsey.”

Lana looked up from her plate. “We’re only going for a night.”

Talia shrugged her shoulders. “I know but that’s like four meals, not to mention snacks.”

Stann pretended to be offended. “Damn it woman, you know Jack and I can cook too.”

Talia looked at Jack and then Stann. “Yeah, but you cook out of necessity and Chef Ramsey cooks with passion.”

Stann slid his chair back and turned to face Talia. “Are you saying I don’t cook with any artistry or zeal?”

Talia lifted one side of her mouth and winked at Lana. “I guess you will have to prove it.”

Stann stood up. “I’ll be right back.”

Jack looked at Talia’s happy face as she watched Stann go into Chef Ramsey’s storage room and chuckled.

“I guess that’s one way to make sure we have supplies,” Jack offered.

“The best way,” Talia giggled.

“Speaking of supplies, were you able to replenish the potions?” Lana enquired.

Talia covered her mouth while she talked and chewed. “Yeah. We have the students harvesting, chopping, and preparing, then I do the final steps with mana. The potions have a slightly higher stat because of it.”

“Really? That’s so much more efficient and the students will advance from the experience,” Lana remarked.

“Stann will have to use a system like that for mass producing weapons,” Jack added.

“I have to do what?” Stann said as he sat back down, looking smug.

“Use students or other residents for some of the easier steps in your weapon making and leave the high mana parts for you.”

Stann frowned. “I don’t know. That might be OK for some of the tools and projects, but I don’t want anyone else knowing how I make some of the special weapons.”

Jack looked at Stann.

“Except you, Jack, …. or Colin,” Stann said. “Our weapons are getting to the point of being more valuable than majority of ones that come out of the Ancient Lands. There are people out there that would murder their own mothers for weapons like that.”

“I suppose that is a good point,” Jack said. They definitely wanted their own people to have the best weapons available, but the larger the supply of weapons, the more likely that people would notice. And while they had an immediate issue with the Westdrift Empire, they didn’t want to gain the attention of others. One war was enough.

“Where are Colin and Kissalin? They should have been here by now,” Talia said as she stacked their breakfast plates.

Jack messaged Willmarth and Dakota. He knew they were nearby scouting the area.

They are just coming in the west gate, Willmarth replied to Jack’s question.
